VADOC Release Paths for Clarke
The Virginia Department of Corrections is a statewide prison and Community Corrections network. It is not a Clarke County jail. No VADOC institution was identified within Clarke County, but the system still matters when a Clarke defendant receives a state sentence. NRADC may hold that person before VADOC reception and classification. A departure from the regional jail can therefore mark the start of state custody, not freedom in the community.
After state confinement, the next status may be probation, parole, post-release supervision, or final discharge. Probation is a court-ordered community status. Parole is conditional release for an eligible sentence. Post-release supervision follows the terms that govern the particular sentence. Discharge means the identified correctional or supervision status has ended. The exact VADOC words and date should be preserved instead of reducing all four outcomes to “released.”
Search VADOC Release Records
The official Inmate & Supervisee Locator covers people in VADOC institutions, probationers and parolees supervised through district offices, people in institutional hospitals, some people in local or regional jails under VADOC authority, and Community Corrections Alternative Program participants. VADOC reports that it updates the data daily, while warning that information can be inaccurate or outdated. It is a current custody and active-supervision tool, not a permanent archive of every Clarke jail admission or old state discharge.
- Enter the first three letters of the first name and the full last name, or use the seven-digit DOC ID.
- Apply location, race, gender, or age-range filters only as needed to distinguish lawful matches.
- Acknowledge the VADOC disclaimer, select Locate, and compare all available identifiers before choosing a record.
- Record the exact status, institution or district office, date field, and search time. Do not turn a projected date into a completed event.
- If no result appears, check the sentencing court, VADOC records, and the last known custodian. “Not found” is not a release status.
The VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator shows the statewide search fields and current disclaimer.
The screen is the correct first route for state status. It does not replace a signed release document, court order, or records response when proof is required.
Read VADOC Release Status
A confined result should identify the exact location or custody wording supplied by VADOC. A community result may identify parole, probation, or another supervised status and may point to a district office. A former prisoner may appear as released or discharged with an associated date, subject to the locator’s publication rules. These labels should not be treated as synonyms.
| VADOC finding | What it supports | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Institutional custody | The person remains in state confinement. | Confirm the institution and any projected date shown. |
| Local or regional jail under authority | State responsibility may exist before prison reception. | Check both VADOC and the named jail. |
| Probation or parole | The person is in the community under active state supervision. | Verify the district assignment and court or Board record. |
| Released | VADOC reports an exit from the identified state custody. | Use release documents when the legal basis or destination matters. |
| Discharged | The stated correctional or supervision status has ended. | Confirm which sentence or supervision term the label covers. |
| No result | No matching public record was returned. | Search the court and records office; do not infer release. |
A DOC ID is safer than a common name. Aliases, spelling differences, data lag, and limited historical display can all affect a result. Preserve the exact text when a release date conflicts with another source.
Prove a VADOC Release
A projected or tentative date is a planning value. It can move due to jail credit, sentence-credit class, disciplinary forfeiture or restoration, a revised court order, consecutive or concurrent terms, statutory ineligibility, or recalculation. A parole grant also is not the physical departure date. The Virginia Parole Board makes the decision in eligible cases, then VADOC addresses the actual release process and custody record.
Completed-event proof is stronger. VADOC’s facility-release process includes the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. The person reads or is read the document, signs it, and a staff witness signs and dates it. Records staff address pending action and property receipts. A detainer may cause transfer to another authority instead of community release.
The VADOC facility-release page describes those signed papers and release-day checks.
That documentary process explains why a dated, signed agency record carries more weight than an earlier projected value or a missing jail-roster name.
Request VADOC Release Records
For a state correctional release record, contact VADOC rather than NRADC or the Clarke Sheriff. Identify the person by DOC ID when available, state the Clarke court and case details, and name the existing document or field needed. A narrow request might seek the final release date, release authority, signed order, supervision status, or time-computation record. Ask for electronic delivery, lawful redaction, segregable nonexempt material, and an estimate before extensive cost.

The VADOC locator and records office answer state questions. NRADC remains the custodian for its own regional-jail admission and departure entry, while the Clarke court holds the sentencing or release order. A complete timeline may require all three.
Note: Give the minimum personal information needed and do not publish a private notice destination, PIN, protected victim detail, or home address.
VADOC Release Records and Virginia Law
Virginia FOIA, Title 2.2, Chapter 37, governs requests to public bodies subject to its definitions, requester rules, and exemptions. The process reaches existing records held by the agency. It does not require VADOC to answer a new research question or create a custom release report. A focused request for a named computation, signed order, or dated status entry is more precise than asking why someone was released.
Correctional, supervision, privacy, safety, security, and active-investigation provisions can limit what is disclosed. Juvenile, sealed, and expunged material needs special care. Ask for segregable nonexempt parts when a record contains both releasable and protected information. Public locator visibility is also different from agency retention, so a missing old result does not establish that the underlying state record no longer exists.
Verify VADOC Release Supervision
VADOC Winchester Probation & Parole, District 11, serves Winchester and Clarke, Frederick, Warren, and Shenandoah counties. When the locator points to community supervision, verify the assignment and whatever status the office may lawfully confirm. The sentencing order controls probation terms. For parole, use the Virginia Parole Board decision and VADOC release papers together.

VADOC’s selected Most Wanted page is an added absconder and warrant channel, but it is not a complete Clarke County warrant index. An absconder is outside required supervision contact and is not discharged. Do not approach anyone listed; use the agency or local law-enforcement contact published for reports.
VADOC Release Notice Limits
Virginia’s state-prison victim notification system is NAAVI. It is separate from local-jail VINE and is limited to eligible registered victims for qualifying VADOC sentences. Registration in VINE does not transfer to NAAVI. NAAVI may provide an anticipated-release notice and a later notice when the person is no longer in VADOC custody, but it must not be described as a general public offender locator.
The public route remains the VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator. Local and regional jail events use Virginia VINE. If a person moves from NRADC into state custody, the local-jail event and later state event belong to different systems. Save the reporting agency with each notice so the two are not merged into one release.
Does a VINE notice follow a person into VADOC? No. The systems are not connected, and a local-jail registration does not become state-prison NAAVI registration.
VADOC Release Date Channels
VADOC time computation uses the controlling sentence, offense date, jail credit, concurrent or consecutive structure, and the credit regime for which the person is eligible. Older parole-eligible or misdemeanor terms may use Good Conduct Allowance. Post-1994 felony terms generally use Earned Sentence Credits, with statutory limits that differ by offense. Credits can be lost or restored. A generic percentage cannot replace the agency calculation.
The Virginia Parole Board remains relevant to older offenses and statutory exceptions even though Virginia abolished discretionary parole for most felony offenses committed on or after January 1, 1995. A Board report may show grant or denial, but a grant is conditional and can precede physical exit. The dedicated Release Date Lookup explains how the credit systems and detainers can change a projected value.
VADOC Release Transfer Checks
State release does not rule out another custodian. A federal detainer, immigration hold, another state case, or local warrant may produce direct transfer. Search BOP only for federal prison status. Use ICE ODLS for immigration detention, noting that its recent-release window is specific to ICE. A federal or immigration result does not establish the date or basis of an NRADC or VADOC departure.
For a defensible Clarke timeline, record the system, agency, exact status, date, and search time. Prefer the custodian’s timestamp for physical departure and the court’s order for legal authority. Keep a conflict visible until the responsible office explains it. The Clarke County released inmate search provides the full sequence across NRADC, the courts, VADOC, BOP, and ICE.
